South East Youth Regional ASA Championships 2006

Individual champions crowned at the South East Regional ASA Championships 2006. At one of the most successful regional championships ever for the City of Canterbury Swimming Club, three swimmers won gold over the weekend of swimming. Star of the show was Nicholas Boylan, swimming in the Muli-Disability category. Nick won five individual titles, the 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, and the 50m backstroke and breaststroke, all were pb's and four were NQT's. Nick was also 2nd in the 400m free in another NQT.

Another swimmer who excelled, winning the 100m fly and swimming under a minute in a pb and NQT was Karl Botha (15) Karl also swam NQT's for the 100m freestyle in which he came 7th and the 200m freestyle in which he was 8th. Another NQT was swum by Kevin Chui(17) in the 50m freestyle. Josh Maley (18) found himself placed 3rd in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, 4th in the 400m IM, and 5th in the 100m and 200m backstroke.

 

On the girls side Louise Smith came home with the 100m breaststroke title. Louise had a busy weekend and as well as her first place she was 4th in the 200m breaststroke and 5th in the 50m freestyle, swam in a pb and NQT. There were also NQT's for Emma Harris (15) in the 100m freestyle and Sophie Tomlin in the 200m backstroke. Emma, showing that hard work in training does pay swam amazingly well all weekend and was also placed in 4th place in the 200m freestyle. Sophie, despite being unwell for some of the weekend also grabbed 3rd in the 100m backstroke. Francesca Beale was 7th in the 200m breaststroke and 8 th in the 100m distance. Stephanie Chaplin was also 8th in the 400m IM.

Showing what strength in depth Canterbury have at present, two girls relay teams were entered for most of the relay events. The freestyle A team of Catherine Lough , Emma Harris, Louise Smith and Helen Robinson came 5th and the B team, consisting of Emma Drabble, Stephanie Chaplin, Rachael Seaman and Emma Stanley came 11th .In the 800m freestyle relay the A team again came 5th . The team was Emma Harris, Emma Drabble, Louise Smith and Helen Robinson . The B team, whose swimmers were Sophie Tomlin, Natalie Shilling, Rachael Seaman and Emma Stanley were 9th .

Finally in the 400 medley relay the team of Sophie Tomlin, Louise Smith, Helen Robinson and Emma Harris were 7th .

So after a hard fought, gruelling weekend of swimming, the club has finished with 3 regional champions, more NQT's and pb's and a total of 14 swimmers qualifying for the 2006 Nationals. A total that has nearly reached that of last year with still a month of qualifying time to go.
