Holiday training times

There is no morning training over the summer holidays - the last morning session is Saturday 2 August. Land training sessions have also finished until September.

Sunday afternoon training is now from 5 to 7 for all groups which normally have Sunday pm sessions. There are no sessions at all between Monday 4 and Saturday 9 August inclusive. Also no training on the bank holiday Monday, 25 August. There will be no Monday or Tuesday training at King's in the weeks beginning 4 August and 11 August.

The normal timetable including mornings restarts on Saturday 27 September.

Please check emails and the notice board for any other changes.

Have a good break, and remember the club championships are on 5, 7 and 14 September.

Helpers needed

The club AGM highlighted our continuing need for more help to run the club as well as throwing up a lot of ideas for improvements and ways to help get people involved. We have a talented bunch of young swimmers, a well-qualified group of volunteer coaches and officials, and volunteer helpers who keep the show on the road, but inevitably (like all clubs) we always need more! Two posts which do need covering urgently are for a fundraising coordinator and a press officer. Also see the news page for details about helping as an official.

New CCSC website

CCSC has a new website, based on the Team Unify system, which aims to provide improved online communication and information. Members should have received individual emails with login details - the new address to bookmark is www.ccscswim.org.uk. Contact treasurer@ccscswim.org.uk with any concerns about logging in or questions about the new system. While the new site is developed we will continue to update this one.

April 2014

Icebreaker gala 2015

We have applied for a level 3 licence for the tenth Icebreaker meet on 10-11 January 2015 which we organise with Dover Lifeguard Club. This includes 100 & 200m in all strokes, 50 & 400m Freestyle, 200 & 400m IM, plus skins events.

AGM and Club Champs dates

The club AGM will be held at Kingsmead on Monday 9 June. This is your chance to hear reports on the year and plans for the future, ask any questions, and elect the committee. We are always looking for more helpers to run the club - if you can spare some time, talk to a committee member to see what is involved.

This year's Club Championships are on 5, 7 and 14 September. Swimmers are encouraged to swim the full range of events, so please try and keep the dates free.

Kent Junior League

Well done to the CCSC team who got our Kent Junior League season off to the best possible start on 17 May, and thanks to the helpers and visiting teams who helped make it such a successful evening at Kingsmead. Full results here and details for Canterbury swimmers on the results page. Round 2 is on 6 September, venue to be decided.

Can you help as an official?

Our swimmers were not the only success story at our gala in April... Congratulations are also due to Mary Aston, who qualified as a J1 (Judge 1) during the meet.

Competitions for our swimmers can only run if we have enough trained officials like Mary - and we need more! There is plenty of support available and you can choose what you want to do and when. If you might like to join in, have a talk to Hilde Koets (our officials coordinator), who is usually at Kingsmead on Wednesday evening - or email her at officials@ccscswim.org.uk.

Tom Slater in British Championships final

City of Canterbury's Tom Slater swum himself into the junior finals of the British championships at Glasgow's Tollcross pool last week. In a field including 2012 Olympian Roberto Pavoni, the eventual overall winner, Slater recorded a time of 4:39.81 in the heats of the 400m individual medley. The sixteen year old dropped just a second on that time to take sixth place in the junior final the same evening, competing against 17 and 18 year olds.

This represents Canterbury's first national finals appearance since our purple patch of a decade ago. Well done Tom!

East Invicta Masters Championships, 5 April 2014

Well done to our masters in this event, held at the King's pool. Thanks to Gary Robertson for the summary below.

Host families wanted

A swimmer from Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain will be joining CCSC in September 2014. Jessica is 18 and studying PE and education as well as training and coaching young swimmers. She would like to stay with a family for the academic year while improving her English. We also have a request for a host family for a 17 year old boy from Barcelona for July and August.

If you might be able to help, please contact Michele Slater at the club. (Michele was coach/team manager for an ASA south east international fixture in Barcelona in January - hence the contact!)

Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers

CCSC is collecting Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers. If you shop at Sainsbury's please take the vouchers entitled to you and hand them in at the CCSC Shop on Friday evenings.Last year, the club used to couchers to get four stopwatches and three trophies. Coaches use the stopwatches during training, and timekeepers at CCSC galas. The trophies will be awarded at our Presentation Evening on Saturday 29th March, 2014 Many winners at Club Championship still do not receive a trophy. Please help us obtain more cups this year. If you are not around when the CCSC shop is open, please pass them to a friend who is!

March 2014

CCSC has been re-assessed in December 2013 and we have been recognised as continuing to meet the ASA's Swim21 quality standard for swimming clubs. Many thanks to Max Watson and the other volunteers involved for ensuring we meet the standard and taking the club through the thorough assessment.

December 2013

Masters swimming

City of Canterbury Masters swimmers have been active in county, national and international competitions during summer 2013.

Star of the show has been Peter Gruitt, with two top ten finishes at the European Masters Championships at the start of September in Eindhoven, Holland. He swam a creditable 9th in the 800m freestyle event and a 10th in the 200m freestyle.

Also at this competition, which hosted upwards of 4000 swimmers from all over Europe, was Paul Webster, who came 11th in the 50m backstroke and 14th in the 200m individual medley event.

Earlier in the summer Peter had a 4th and two 5ths at the GB National Long Course Championships in Plymouth. Likewise Paul had a good outing at the French National Long Course Championships in Antibes in the south of France. He won gold in the 50m backstroke, together with a couple of bronze medals in the 50m butterfly and the 200m individual medley respectively. Back here in Kent, Toby Smith put in some good performances in the County Championships at Gillingham in July. He won gold in the 50m breaststroke and bronzes in the 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley. 9 September 2013

Dan Seagrove-Castle takes Commonwealth medal

Dan Seagrove-Castle is competing at the RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Canberra, Australia, on 4th-8th September, with some fantastic results. Day 1 saw him take fourth place in the Open 200m obstacles race, following up with silver with the England team in the 4x50m obstacles relay.

Spoof/'phishing' emails

Just a reminder to be cautious about unusual emails. An email scam attempting to obtain passwords is current, with a subject line such as 'VIEW THIS DOCUMENT' and text such as 'I sent you a message using google doc'. Standard advice is to delete suspicious emails and don't reply or click on links in them. Do not provide your Google account details or similar personal information in response to emails - if you have done, you should change your password. CCSC will not ask for passwords in emails. August 2013

Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers

Thanks to everyone who donated their vouchers to the club. We have used them to get three new trophies. These will be presented to swimmers for performances during the club championships in September. We also received four stopwatches for coaches to use during training and for gala officials to use during competitions.

Club record broken

Congratulations to Tom Slater, who has broken the club record for the 400m individual medley in the junior (16U) category. His time of 4:46.28 set in the Kent championships improves on Luke Smith's 4:49.35 from 2006. We don't keep 400m IM records for the 14/15 age group - as a 15 year old he would have that as well... 18 June 2013

New starter in the club

Well done to Hilde Koets, who has qualifed as a J2S (ASA qualified starter), passing her assessment at the Margate gala following the necessary study, training and practice. 3 June 2013

Active Kids - Sainsburys vouchers

We are collecting Active Kids vouchers towards training equipment. When you do your Sainsbury's shop, make sure you pick up your vouchers and bring them along on club nights!

Open water officiating

Alison Allen from Thanet Swim Club has passed on the following information about learning to officiate at open water events:

The ASA South East Region Open Water section Manager is hoping to organise a training day to recruit Open Water officials within our region. I have been working with him to organise some open water events including this training day to try and raise the profile of open water swimming in the South East. We have provisionally booked 22nd June 2013 at Holborough Lake in Snodland to hold the training day and are trying to circulate the information to as many local clubs as possible to try and generate some interest. The course will take only one day to complete and no previous experience/qualifications are necessary although an interest in swimming would probably be helpful!

I would be grateful if you would consider circulating this information to your club members to see if anyone may be interested in taking part in this training day.

Please feel free to pass on my email address [via ccsc.membership@gmail.com] to anyone that may be interested and I will be happy to forward more information.

The City of Canterbury AGM will take place on Monday 3rd June 2013. In accordance with the Club's constitution part of the agenda is to elect members of the Constitutional Committee. Nominations for election of members to any office or membership of the committee need to be made in writing by the proposer and seconder to the acting club secretary (Gill Casey) by April 30th on a nomination form. If you are an existing committee member and wish to continue in your current position you are still required to complete and sign a nomination form.

If you know someone who might be interested in joining the committee then similarly please complete the form and sign the declaration - please make sure that the person you are nominating is happy to be nominated by by getting them to sign the bottom of the form.

Notice of any resolution proposed to be moved at the AGM need to be made in writing to acting before the next committee meeting on 1st May.

New official qualifies

Congratulations to Tony McDonnell, who qualified as a Judge (J1) in March 2013, at the Kent schools gala. He worked hard to gain this qualification and will soon be a licenced official for CCSC. Well done Tony!

CCSC is always on the lookout for new officials. Training is offered free of charge and there are other qualified officials in the club who are always willing to offer advice and support.

Success for CCSC officials

The East Invicta championships in October 2012 produced some notable achievements for CCSC volunteers as well as swimmers. Several City of Canterbury officials are improving their skills and gaining qualifications. During the first EI weekend Adam Morgan passed his Starter's course and at the second weekend Hilde Koets passed her Judge 2 assessment. Lorraine Gardiner (already a qualified timekeeper) has started her Judge 1 course.

As a club we are always in need of officials. If you would like to find out about volunteering as an official, with whatever time you have to spare, don't hesitate to speak to one of our current officials, or let the committee know. They are always more than happy to talk. Courses are offered free of charge to anyone interested, and there is a friendly system of mentoring in operation.

This also applies to those interested in gaining a coaching qualification. Without qualified officials we would be unable to promote our galas, and we are also expected to provide officials when our swimmers attend away meets.

Team of the Year Award

Collecting Team of the Year award

City of Canterbury SC have been placed third in team of the year section in the Kent Regional News & Media sports awards 2012. Some of our swimmers went to collect the award at a dinner at Eastwell Manor on 15 November - see the Canterbury Times newspaper of 22 November for a report and picture.

East Invicta Championships 2012

Congratulations to Dan Seagrove-Castle and Joshua Cowham on new championship records in the open 100m freestyle (53.02) and 9/10 years 50m breaststroke (40.64).
