ASA Zonal Meet
South
29-30 January 2011
Crystal Palace National Sports Centre
This new competition, introduced in 2011, brings together swimmers from three regions - South West, South East and London - into a Zonal Championship. The 2011 event was hosted by London Region at Crystal Palace.
Canterbury had nine swimmers qualifying for this prestigious competition: Ben Watson, Charlotte Davies, Dan Seagrove-Castle, Ege Sever, Elizabeth Wells, Jake Davies, Sam Woodard, Simone Ward and Sophie Weymouth.
With qualifying times as hard as they were it showed that City of Canterbury Swimming Club has a great depth of swimmers swimming in all events. The competition came along right in the middle of some very hard training so placings were the aim of the game, with times coming second, Crystal Palace being one of those pools that is notoriously slow.
Those who were there showed why they had been selected with a good number finals and top ten finishes, even though PBs and long course NT qualifying times were not on the agenda.
Two City of Canterbury swimmers did gain long course national qualifying times - Ben Watson in the 200 free in a time of 1:56.93 for 2nd place and Charlotte Davies earning 2 LCNTs, in 200 fly 2:23.68 and 1:05.58 in the 100 fly. Sophie Weymouth just missed out on the 400 free qualifying time by 0.48 in a time of 4:31.69.
Dan Seagrove-Castle came in 4th in the 200 free, Ege Sever was 5th place holder in the 200IM and with all the other swimmers producing great swims it bodes well for the Kent County Championships that start on the 12th February at Medway Park.
